the house sounds off when it's settling
like the creaky cupboard that the tea kettle's in
it makes poor kate think of ghosts

the wooden floorboard's always cold
a focal like sunlight would never burn a whole
it's further evidence to kate that she made a mistake

the house was built after an earthquake
where rumor has it a young family could not escape
so now they haunt this cozy new kitchen

and i guess things get a little bewitching
when the stairwell starts singing
and kate is driving far from home

and something's funny with the stove
four burners on and all on their own
is this what they meant when they said the house had charm

just then something cold grabs my arm
a little girl says "i mean no harm"
but would it be funny if i said "trick or treat"

kate came home and said hello to me
and i said you're right we have to leave
